Udayan Care is taking a leap forward in Advocacy issues. While we have always been campaigning for Child Protection Policies, better and superior laws and rules for positive mental health and well being; the recently concluded two-days national workshop on 6th and 7th November 2009 on "Positive Mental Health and Well being of Children in Institutional Care" was quite a landmark.
It marks the first time that Udayan Care, in its 16 years, has officially tied up in a collaborative venture with the Government of India; through its apex agency for Child Rights Protection – NCPCR – National Commission for Protection of Child Rights. The other apex academic institution – NIPCCD (National Institute for Public Cooperation and Child Development) were the intellectual partners. At the NGO level, QIC&AC – a confederation of about 30 odd NGOs working for child welfare, was represented here by Udayan Care, which took on the leadership role in bringing forth the good Mental Health management practices amongst different Child Care agencies from the length and breadth of the country!!! There were state representatives and NGO representatives from all over India, who deliberated on the best practices, there were mental health experts who dicussed issues suh as grieving & loss, etc. The workshop concluded with signing a pledge by all the members present to advocate for the need for a National Declaration to develop a Child Protection Policy for each Child Care organisation. A distict need for developing SOPs also emerged.
