Manager - Volunteer Management, and Mr. Adil Sanwari - Resource Mobiliser.
With the fresh flock in, we look forward to some fresh action soon.
UDAYAN GHAR PROGRAMME :
Not less than a dream!

Straight from a fairytale
Enter our Children’s Home at Sant Nagar and you enter a world full of fantasies. Ms. Sujata Ranganathan, the Architect and her team labored for days, pro bono, converting our 14 year old Children’s Home (the 1st Udayan Ghar) into a ‘Dream House’.
Any guesses on who took care of the soaring bills of the contractor? It was Indian Oil once again! The Corporate has been sponsoring this Home for children since past 5 years and they continued to support us in this endeavor too. The remaining amount was footed by one of the international volunteers at the home, Ms. Mehr Agarwal. This 18 year old, volunteered at the home two years back, when she was merely 16 and now she has returned to us as a donor. Good going kid!
Wanna join us?
The walls and furniture took their colour from the Mentor Mother of the Home, Ms. Isabel Sahni while they were draped by Ms. Kaushalya Madhwan, one of our donors and volunteers at the home.
We just cannot thank all of you enough for creating a masterpiece for our children. We hope a similar fortune for our other children’s homes too. Donors/ sponsors/ volunteers/ mentors, hope you are listening!
The Healing Touch!
MAX India foundation along with MAX Health Care very kindly agreed to do a general health check up of all our kids every quarter while JK Risk Managers & Insurance Brokers Ltd. provided health insurance to some of our children and are looking for sponsorship for more.
Our children will be healthier because of you now! Thank You!
Corporate Tinge!
The dynamics of professional relationships can only be understood if a person observes the interactions that take place in a strictly professional set up. Thus, we encourage our children to visit various Corporates and experience a life that will soon be their own.
Hence, Corporate Mentoring Program with CSC, Steria, Absolutdata, MakeMyTrip.Com and adidas continued at our various homes.
Varied Expressions!
Colour them wild
Orange, a Corporate at Gurgaon celebrated the completion of 4 years of their ‘Major Service Center’ with our boys from the Gurgaon Home. Children took part in a painting competition there.
Children from Greater Noida participated in a Talent Hunt organized by an NGO, Amrit Path and won a cheque of Rs.1100/- for their exemplary Yoga performance.
For the ‘BHAI’
Noida boys’ home hosted Rakhi celebration this year by inviting the entire Udayan family to their premises. Relationships rekindled as children once again pledged their love for each other.
Big FM celebrated Satkrishna Janmashthmi Function by inviting our children from Sant Nagar to their corporate office. Children stole hearts by giving a dance performance there. Girls from our Sant Nagar and Mehrauli Homes received an opportunity to think afresh when they were invited to a modern art exhibition that was organized by Mr. Anubhav Nath. His organization, the Ramchandernath Foundation roped in some well known artists who directed the inmates of Tihar jail into making some beautiful paintings which were then placed in an Art Exhibition at ‘Mati Ghar’. ‘Ek Bandar Hotel ke Andar’, this was the tiltle of the movie that was shown to our Sant Nagar children by DHL. The Corporate also donated nightgowns that brought more colour to the dreams of our children at Sant Nagar. The girls simply adored them.
9 girls from our Greater Noida Home, dressed in pink and black costumes sponsored by Mary Kay, presented a beautiful song at the Mary Kay’s Dealer Meet. Touched by our work, the Corporate has decided to donate us a dollar each on every sale of its 2 lipsticks.
In sync with Future!
Two of our girls from Sant Nagar joined vocational courses at South Delhi Polytechnic for Women after completing their schooling and are now staying at the institute hostel. The other two from Greater Noida found employment at a Cosmetic Shop and a Book Store at Greater Noida.
Seeking Solutions!
Mulling over matter!
Parents, since ages, have been spending sleepless nights over their children’s studies. The same is true for our mentor mothers and fathers. They continue to fret about it while the children spend their days in blissful ignorance. Therefore, this period too saw Dr. Deepak Gupta, our Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and Ms. Priyanka Goenka, the Psychologist addressing the issue of motivating children towards studies.
In the month of July, the Caregivers found solace in Ms. Sadaf Farooq, the Social Worker at Sant Nagar Home who discussed solutions to the mental/ emotional/ physical problems that the caregivers face every day while dealing with the children. While August called for showing more ownership towards the homes and the responsibilities assigned to the caregivers.
Our Pillars of Strength!
Donors
Thank You Dear Donors for making our cause your own and helping our various projects grow through your donations. We thrive on you!
Volunteers
Teach India Campaign once again helped us showcase our work before thousands of people aspiring to volunteer with us. We were overwhelmed to receive almost 500 enrollments for our 9 Children’s Homes. We have already roped in a number of candidates and are still in the process of contacting more.
We are extremely grateful to Seamus Jennings and Dee Jethwa, social care experts who specially arrived from London to meet all our stakeholders in order to assess the strengths and gaps in our system and develop a replicable model of the same. We look forward to receiving trainings from them in near future on how to improvise upon our systems.
Joining Hands, Via and Volunteering Solutions continued to help us receive foreign volunteers for our children’s homes. Volunteers from Germany, Denmark, USA, Canada, Hungary, France and Ireland came to us during this period and continue to provide their services to our children with great commitment.
For two months, Ms. Nasreen Singh volunteered to work for our cause and helped us in our endeavor with the Times of India group, the Home of Joy initiative as well as our upcoming Marathon. She made presentations for us on Teach India Volunteer induction as well as helped us in our database.
Interns
SOIL sent us a few of their students from SIP (Social Initiative Program) to work as interns with us. We received another set of interns from Delhi University, Kamla Nehru College and Indraprastha University, New Delhi and one from University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun.
Our Pride!
CWC Member, Mayur Vihar, Dr. R. The zeal to secure an empowered future was evident in the Fellows as they attended the workshop that was organized at Mahavir Senior Model School.
Mr. Pathak invited 7 professionals from different walks of life who inspired our girls to transform themselves into eternal winners. Successful people from Media, Marketing, Information Technology, Fashion and Apparel, Mass Communication, Retail and Pharmaceuticals shared pros and cons of their profession with the group. It was a great exposure for our Fellows as they received first hand information on the various options available. The aim of UDAYAN CARE is to bring sunshine into the lives of the disadvantaged.
Udayan Care is a Trust under the Indian Trust Act registered with Sub Registrar III, on February, 1994.
With the very simple yet superb values “Courage, Commitment, Trust“ , the trust states its mission statement as 'Regenerate the rhythm of life of the disadvantaged.’
It goes without saying that this is not just an institution but the home where children get their foster parents; get the new window to the world which was not open for them before coming here.

The basic MISSION of UDAYAN CARE is :

Udayan Care's mission is to transform disadvantaged lives and make them into 'Eternal Winners'.
It supports the education of deserving girl students from weaker sections of the society through its 'Udayan Shalini Fellowship Program'.
It helps them shape their own futures:
It helps children overcome their past traumas and help them recognize and express their individual abilities, interests and talents.
It ensures that children receive quality education and skills training to be successful and contributing members of society.

The VISION of UDAYAN CARE is:

Establishing more Udayan Ghar across the country based on its model of Group Fostering, Mentoring, Community Ownership and Quality Care.
Reaching out to many more disadvantaged but deserving girls on a National level for Fellowship program .
Conducting more vocational courses under CREAT to enable our children as well as the nearby community to be self-reliant and to face the challenges of the world .Get Health Curriculum included in the regular school curriculum.
Reaching out to more non +) ve children of HIV affected parents.

Our Experience:

My first day in UDAYAN:

6th of August, 2006, it was a hot Sunday noon, not the usual one but the first Sunday of August, Yes, it was a friendship day, my first friendship day when I was all alone having no friend of mine physically present with me.
I was waiting for this day very eagerly due to several reasons not just because it was FRIENDSHIP DAY and I was certain to get calls from my loved ones and I was dead sure to cherish those gone days again, but there were some other reasons too.
I had received a forwarded mail days before from Vikas an IBMer asking for people who were ready for volunteer themselves for UDAYAN CARE.
I had contacted the person whose name was given in that mail and he gave me his words to pick me up on this day to UDAYAN. But that person could not reach my residence and at last we decided to meet at a place known both to us and after half an hour, I was in the middle of a gathering of chirping, twiddling, twirling kids in the premises of UDAYAN.
For a moment I was speechless as kids started talking to that new friend of mine who had taken me there and I did not know how to introduce myself. Was I supposed to say: Hey Dear! Meet me Isha, a person who wants to make a difference in this world so she is in front of you, one who is going to turn your world upside down just by giving her few hours or something very simple and casual like Hey me Isha and you….??
In spite of being a very talkative person, I really couldn't speak to those kids because I really didn't know at that point if I had given enough thoughts about how I could make a difference to their life, if I was going to do something really meaningful to them. It seems strange but let me be honest that I really was clueless about my own thinking. Well that day was not bad at all; I met few more IBMers and many more people from different organizations.
We all sat together to decide what we were going to do to. I deliberately chose the children of lower classes to teach as I thought that it would be easier to mould them but My God! They simply proved me simpleton. William Wordsworth would have been very delighted if he had seen these children proving his quote: CHILD IS THE FATHER OF MAN.
Anyways, the day was a nice beginning since I made a start and there was something which had set me thinking, other than getting the company of twenty one amazing, small kids cum friends along with many more companions.
It is really amazing to see the curiosity in few of them to know about anything and everything.
At times, questions are very tough, sometimes the queries are simply French and German to me but most of time they are very silly and funny and Thank God, I am able to convince or confuse them.
It is never easy to start a thing in a new way but then life is generous enough to give us opportunities from time to time. We just need to come forward a step or two and the whole journey keeps on slipping beneath our feet. Some time when the world seems to be a very tough place to live in, these kids make me realize that life is still beautiful; we just need to keep our eyes open.
It was that single step I had taken days ago; I need to think a lot in coming days to keep on moving to achieve some of the aim set by my subconscious mind while thinking of these kids.
So think, think and think……

…Isha

P.S: Thanks a lot Isha for this wonderful initiative, hopefully other volunteers will also post their experience.

The first Step

Udayan care has some vacancies for Chief Operating Officer and Program Manager in the organisation. The vision is to ‘Regenerate the rhythm of life of the disadvantaged’.In the Words of Children:
Moments of Pride!
Our PrideA history of deprivation did not deter Smitha Verma, our Udayan Shalini Fellow from becoming a model of compassion. After receiving Fellowship from us from Class XI onwards, she completed B.Tech from Indraprastha College and got a job at Fluor Daniel Construction & Refineries. As soon as she became independent, she volunteered to provide financial support to 2 girls in their studies. Even though many corporates and volunteers came forward with donations and help, what we really appreciated was a student –to – student contribution, made by Gaurav Ajmera, a B.Tech student of IIT, Delhi and his friends from INSPIRE group, Tarun, Geetika, Sandeep, Ayush, Ashish, Ritesh, Puneet Meena and Puneet Gupta. They raised Rs. 15,000/- for us out of their pocket money.Spokesperson, Congress man and a leading jurist, Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, with his group of friends from 'Walkers' Gang' celebrated the birthday of their dear friend Mr. Memani (from Ernst & Young), with a difference.
